Not everyone knows they need forest therapy until they recognize themselves in the reasons others seek it out.
You don’t need to be “outdoorsy” or in crisis. You don’t need to have everything figured out. Sometimes, you just need to notice that something isn’t quite right—and that the usual ways of coping aren’t working the way they used to.
Here are five signs that forest therapy might be exactly what you need right now.
1. You Feel Disconnected from Yourself
Life has become a series of tasks. You move through your days on autopilot—working, caring for others, checking things off lists—but somewhere along the way, you lost track of what you actually feel or need.
You might find yourself asking: Who am I outside of what I do for everyone else?
Forest therapy creates space to reconnect with yourself. In the quiet presence of trees, without the demands and distractions of daily life, you can begin to hear your own voice again. The forest doesn’t ask anything of you. It simply witnesses. And in that witnessing, you remember who you are beneath all the roles you play.
2. You’re Navigating a Major Life Transition
Whether it’s grief, a career change, postpartum adjustment, recovery from illness, or simply the feeling that one chapter has ended and the next hasn’t yet begun—transitions are disorienting.
The ground beneath you feels uncertain. You’re not who you were, but you’re not yet who you’re becoming.
Nature understands transitions intimately. Every season is a threshold. Every forest holds cycles of growth, release, dormancy, and renewal. Walking through these transitions alongside the natural world can help you trust the process of your own unfolding.
Forest therapy offers a place to be in the liminal space without rushing to “fix” or “move on.” You’re held by something larger than your uncertainty.

3. Traditional Therapy Feels Too Confined
Talk therapy has its place, and for many people, it’s essential. But sometimes, sitting in a room talking about your life isn’t enough. You need to move. You need air. You need to be part of something alive.
If you’ve found yourself thinking, I need more than words right now, forest therapy might be the bridge you’re looking for.
Here, healing happens not just through language but through presence, through sensory connection, through the body’s wisdom. The forest becomes a therapist—offering metaphors, reflections, and a kind of holding that can’t be replicated indoors.
4. You’re Experiencing Overwhelm, Anxiety, or Burnout
Your nervous system is stuck in overdrive. You’re tired but can’t rest. Your mind races even when your body desperately needs to slow down. You feel like you’re holding everything together with willpower alone—and it’s running out.
Research shows that time in nature reduces cortisol, lowers heart rate, and shifts the nervous system out of chronic stress mode. But beyond the science, there’s something even simpler: the forest doesn’t demand anything of you.
You don’t have to be productive here. You don’t have to perform or achieve or even “get better.” You can just be—breathing, walking, noticing. And in that simplicity, your nervous system begins to remember what safety feels like.

5. You Long for Something You Can’t Quite Name
There’s a pull you can’t articulate. A sense that you need something different, something more grounded, more alive. You find yourself drawn to images of forests, to the idea of quiet, to the thought of being held by something older and wiser than your own mind.
This longing is real. And it’s not asking you to explain or justify it.
Sometimes, the body knows what we need before the mind can catch up. If you feel that pull—that sense that the woods might hold something you’re searching for—trust it.
Forest therapy is for people who are ready to stop pushing so hard and start listening more deeply.

You Don’t Need to Be Sure
If any of these signs resonated with you, that’s enough. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you step into the woods. You just need to be willing to show up and see what happens.
The forest will meet you where you are.
