Small group of people sitting in a forest setting

What to Expect on a Healing Pathway

By Sandra Minnie

If you’re considering joining a Healing Pathway, you might be wondering: What actually happens when we gather in the woods?

It’s a fair question. Forest therapy isn’t hiking. It’s not traditional talk therapy moved outdoors. And it’s certainly not about achieving anything or going anywhere fast.

So what is it?

A Gentle Invitation

Each Healing Pathway session begins with a simple invitation: to slow down, to arrive as you are, and to let the forest meet you where you’re at.

We gather as a small group—never more than eight people—in a carefully chosen natural setting. There’s no pressure to share, perform, or “do it right.” You’re welcome to participate as much or as little as feels comfortable.

Sensory Invitations

Throughout our time together, I offer what we call “invitations”—gentle prompts that encourage you to engage with the forest through your senses.

You might be invited to notice what calls to you. To feel textures. To listen deeply. To follow your curiosity. These aren’t instructions—they’re doorways. You choose which ones to walk through.

Between invitations, there’s time. Time to wander, sit, breathe, or simply be.

The Sharing Circle

If and when you’re ready, we gather to share what we’ve noticed—not to analyze or explain, but simply to witness each other’s experiences.

This is where narrative therapy weaves in naturally. As we share our observations from the forest, we often find ourselves noticing patterns, metaphors, and insights about our own lives. The forest becomes a mirror, reflecting back what we need to see.

There’s no fixing here. No advice-giving. Just listening—deep, compassionate, unhurried listening.

What You Don’t Need

You don’t need to be fit, outdoorsy, or comfortable in nature. Our pace is slow and mindful. We don’t cover much distance.

You don’t need to know what you’re feeling or have your story figured out. The forest helps with that.

You don’t need to be “spiritual” or believe in anything particular. This practice works regardless of your worldview.

What You Might Notice

People often describe feeling:

  • A sense of relief or lightness
  • More grounded and present
  • Connected to something larger than their struggles
  • Surprised by unexpected insights or emotions
  • Simply held—by the group, by the forest, by the moment

Some sessions feel profound. Others feel quietly restorative. Both are exactly right.

Practical Details

Each Healing Pathway runs for 6 weeks, meeting weekly for approximately 2-3 hours per session. Programs are designed around specific themes—grief, life transitions, postpartum adjustment, cancer recovery, trauma, or general life overwhelm.

All you need to bring is yourself, weather-appropriate clothing, water, and a willingness to be present.

An Invitation

If you’re still curious, trust that curiosity. Your body and heart often know what you need before your mind catches up.

The woods are patient. They’ll be here when you’re ready.
